Sacramental Preparation Programs
Baptism of Infants
For a child to be baptized in the Catholic Church the parents must be married in the Church and practicing their faith. Requirements are: an interview with the Pastor and attendance at three two hour sessions of instruction and preparation for the parents (and godparents if possible). They are scheduled every other month on the first three Monday evenings from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. or by special arrangement with the Director of Religious Education.
R.C.I.A. adapted for children:
Scheduled as needed for children age seven and older. When scheduled, the classes meet at the same time as the regular classes on Sundays.
Sacrament of Reconciliation (Penance):
Children at least seven years old are prepared directly by their parents with the guidance of Director of Religious Education. Preparation consists of five or six evening sessions for children and parents, including a celebration and activity time for the children and instruction for the parents. First Penance Service is held in December so that the children have several months of using the sacrament before their First Communion.
Sacrament of the Eucharist:
Children at least age seven are prepared directly by their parents with the guidance of the Director of Religious Education. Preparation consists of five evening sessions for children and parents, including an activity time for the children and instruction and aides for the parents. There is also a mini-retreat for the communion candidates. First Communion is held the first Sunday of May at the 11:00 a.m. Mass.
Sacrament of Confirmation:
To be eligible for this sacrament the young person needs to be at least 16 years old and a junior in high school. Confirmation is held at St. Edward’s in the even numbered years. Preparation consists of six Sunday afternoon sessions during Lent for candidates and their sponsors.
