Pastor's Thoughts

This weekend we celebrate two important observances: All Saints Day on November 1st and the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed or All Souls Day on November 2nd.
One of the things that is important to me about All Saints Day is to remember those saintly but ordinary people who have had a profound influence in my life and have taught me how to walk toward the Kingdom of God.
I cherish the memory of my four grandparents who exhibited their holiness in genuine everyday living: Grandpa John who to me was a witness of great patience, Grandma Susie who personified nurturing, Grandpa Andy who truly made work a grace, and Grandma Mary Ann who was innovative and inquisitive.
I thank God for Sister Concepta, my first-grade teacher, who combined disciple with attentiveness, and Sister Patricia, my eight-grade teacher, who was alive with laughter and music.
I gratefully remember Father Philip OFM who gave me my First Communion, Father Reinhold OFM who thrust me into leadership, and Father Victor OFM who made me be very clear about my intentions.
I often think of Dolores from California and Francine from South Dakota, John from Barnet and Michael from Sydney.
I look to these "saints" for inspiration and intercession. Who are some of the saints who have made you who you are? Name them. Thank them. Pray to them.
On All Souls Days my thoughts and my prayers especially turn to the people who have been buried from this parish since last November 2nd. I ask you to join me in praying to God for eternal rest and perpetual light for our brothers and sisters whose names are listed elsewhere in this bulletin. Each one has been somehow part of the fabric of our lives here at St. Anthony's and deserves our solidarity with them in prayer.
For all of you who have lost a relative or friend this past year, may the Lord give you peace and consolation.
On a final note, I extend my thanks and appreciation to "Martha's Friends" for preparing funeral luncheons during this past year; you provide a great service at a time of special need.
--Father Benet OFM

(Brother Loyola will be gone November 2-6, and I will be giving a retreat to the Poor Clare nuns near Philadelphia November 5-14.)

"If a man wishes to come after me, he must deny his very self, take up his cross, and follow in my steps" (Mk 8:34). We demonstrate our love for God by our love for our neighbor. Stewardship calls us to serve one another through love ... bearing one another's burdens and therefore fulfilling Jesus' commandment.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY

About Christian Worship:
--compiled by Brother Richard OFM "..Authenticity in worship style is poorly served in a community that schedules, for instance, a 'contemporary' Mass at 10:00 and a 'traditional' Mass at 11:30. Schedules of this kind are often intended to serve different groups of people in the parish.
Consider, however the division in the community [this reflects]...If we cannot learn to sing one another's songs and if we cannot learn to join in one another's prayer, how do we expect to share in the Lord's healing and reconciling ministry?...Reminding ourselves that the ideal situation would be one celebration of the eucharist on the Lord's day for which the entire community would assemble, we can envision that a Sunday eucharist would call for a confluence of styles, yielding a wonderfully woven tapestry of the community's prayer. Granted, a confluence of styles requires much work, time and sacrifice, but anything less than this borders dangerously on remaining self-serving, self-gratifying and self- centered - all of which is alien to the heart of Christian worship."

CHANGES TO OUR WORSHIP AID

Believe it or not, Advent is just around the corner, beginning at the end of November. Advent also ushers the beginning of a new liturgical year for the Church. Our annual subscription for missalettes and hymnals with Oregon Catholic Press renews as well.
As you might recall, for a number of years we have received both missalettes, which change with the seasons of the liturgical year, and the Music Issue Hymnal, which stay in the pews year-round. These worship aids have served us well.
But starting with this year's subscription, you will notice a big change. Starting with the First Sunday of Advent, we will replace two worship aides with a single new aid:
Breaking Bread for 1998.
Rather than catch you unprepared at the end of November, I thought you would appreciate a few comments about the change before it starts, and why we decided to make it. So, for the next few weeks you can look forward to a little blurb from me about the reasons for changing our subscription.
Next week: what's new with our subscription.

--Doug Potts, music minister

MASS AND ANOINTING OF THE SICK

St. Pius V Parish invites all of St. Anthony's parishioners to a special celebration of the Eucharist with the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick on Saturday, November 8, at 1:00pm. Christ taught his disciples to be a community of love by praying together, by sharing all things, and by caring for the sick. The St. Pius parishioners invite you to participate in this event and to witness to this teaching of Jesus.

Parish News

THE BOOK OF LIFE will be available in the center of the church throughout the month of November so that you can enter the names of those who have gone before us in faith and that we all can pray for them during this month commemorating the Faithful Departed.

MEMORIALS: During this month of November, as we remember our beloved dead in a special way, you are reminded that there are many special ways you can memorialize your dearly departed here at St. Anthony's, for example:
1. Live Flowers for Special Feasts, like Christ the King or Immaculate Conception, over and above Christmas and Easter ($25 per small bouquet);
2. Sanctuary Lamps lit in prayerful remembrance of those who have gone before us ($5 per candle);
3. Memorial Donation for a new book for the parish library, for the Jan Krus Memorial Scholarship Fund, or for the Building Fund.

THE SECOND COLLECTION this weekend is for the Retirement Fund for Religious. Please express your gratitude with your generosity.

LEARN & EARN: All are invited to Session 2 of the "Learn and Earn" program sponsored by our Food Pantry. The topic is "Cleaning and Saving" which will be held on Thursday, November 6, at 10:00am in the Youth Center. Clients will earn a gift; all can learn new ideas from our speaker, Betty Krull. Session 3 in December will be on the Welfare Reform Program.

8TH GRADE RAFFLE: Our 8th graders are raffling off a beautiful handmade quilt which was donated by Brother Loyola. The money raised will go towards an 8th grade trip. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Tickets will be on sale after all Masses beginning the weekend of Nov. 8-9th, or call the school at 752-3397. The raffle will be held on December 22 at school.

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP for people experiencing the loss of a loved one will meet every other Tuesday at 10:30am in the West Meeting Room. The next gathering will be November 11. Call Kate Tansey, our social worker, at 353-7470 for more details.
