Pastor's Thoughts

"Where there are jealousy and strife, there is also inconstancy and all kinds of vile behavior" (Jas 3:16).
These words communicate a "truism" that is so prevalent in today's society; it even infects the way we are "church" to one another. "L.S.M.F.T." -- "Low self-esteem means friction and trouble."
When we have a negative opinion of ourselves or a low estimation of our worth or contribution, we get into all sorts of destructive attitudes and behaviors, like jealousy, violence, anger, damaging speech, avoidance, rudeness, and so forth. Such negativity spawns even more havoc in words and actions until the power of evil takes over and undermines any effort to build peace and justice and unity.
We see this happening in our families. We see this happening in our society. We even can see this coming about in the parish.
Every once in a while -- usually in conjunction with proposing or carrying out some sort of pastoral change -- there is a rash of negative behavior which communicates to me as pastor a number of clear messages:
1. When the power of evil works to dismantle any growth or development in this faith community, I know that the proposed changes must really be what the Lord is calling us to be and do.
2. The self-worth of this parish is fragile enough to make some people either deny our corporate sinfulness or misinterpret my call to spiritual renewal as a condemnation or moody "black cloud."
3. The jealousy and strife I have encountered, which have lead to various kinds of "inconstancy" (from work-stoppage to a kind of spiritual blackmail) and vile behavior (from shunning to arguments in the parking lot to twisting the truth), show me the great need among us to "go, rebuild the Church" in a very profound way.
When we break through the power of evil and strengthen our self-worth and dismantle our jealous and strife and thereby get rid of our inconstancy and vile behavior, we can move forward all the more swiftly to embrace the Lord with a pure heart, a clear mind, and a free hand.
--Father Benet OFM

"The one who wishes to rank first, must remain the last one of all and the servant of all" (Mk 9:35. To serve is to reign. This teaching was exemplified by Jesus' life and death. Christ is the ultimate steward, sacrificing everything, even his life for us. How are we following his example of service?

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY@@

About Parish Unity
-- compiled by Brother Richard OFM "...One of the main concerns of pastors and of the faithful who have responsibilities [in the parish] is to promote harmonious unity in the community. This is an essential condition if the local Church is to be a transparent sign of Christ's presence in the eyes of the baptized who do not take part in her daily life and in society as a whole. Among Christians, there is an enormous diversity of social backgrounds, cultures, interests as well as charism. The parishes' vocation is precisely to enable each individual to express himself and to be part of the unity of the body formed by different but complementary members..."
--John Paul II, "The Vocation of the Parish," January 25, 1997.
