Pastor's Thoughts

"My brothers [and sisters], your faith in our Lord Jesus Christ glorified must not allow of favoritism" (Jas 2:1).
These words from this weekend's second reading prompts me to reflect upon its application (or lack thereof) in our parish.
We are striving to be "one body, one spirit in Christ." One of the hallmarks of this being "brought together in unity by the Holy Spirit" is a lack of favoritism or a willingness to set aside pet opinions or projects or groups to work together for the common good.
Here's the rub: Because of the historical and cultural nature of this parish, we still do experience a great deal of "favoritism" at St. Anthony's and hence suffer a lack of unity because of it.
What do I mean? I give you some examples:
"Favoritism" is regarding the incidental traditions of years-gone-by to be more important than the current teachings of the Church. The Church is the developing (that is, changing in its application) deposit of Scripture and Tradition, Faith and Morals.
"Favoritism" is considering newcomers to the parish to be outsiders until they conform to the old ways. Every parishioner -- whether life-long or newly registered, whether senior citizen or young adult, whether Caucasian or African-American or Asian -- is to be equal in dignity and in influence.
"Favoritism" is looking upon persons different than you as somehow "less" because they don't do something the way you'd like. Just because the Church is "our home," we must not ever impose our conformity upon others; this is deadly discrimination and blatant bias.
"Favoritism" is perpetuating the same power-structures and control issues. The parish that does not substitute collaboration for domination dies.
"Favoritism" is rumoring and murmuring, gossiping or complaining to a third party because something isn't done to your liking. Anything under the table or behind the back wounds the Body of Christ.
If you think I'm talking about you, I probably am. If you recognize yourself in these lines (I see myself in them!), God is calling you to change.
--Father Benet OFM

"My brothers and sisters, your faith in our Lord Jesus Christ glorified must not allow for favoritism" (Jas 2:1). QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Continued from last week on altar servers:
I do wish the servers participated more fully in the celebration of the Eucharist. "Servers, whatever their age, should be seen singing, listening, keeping good silence. They are to model the activity of the assembly." (G. Huck, Liturgy with Style and Grace) While this is something we need to work on, it is also important that we, all of us, model to the servers as well, by participating in the liturgy fully and actively.
As for saying that the servers are not praying when they minister...Well, I don't think I can comment on that. It's not up to me, or you, to judge if someone is praying or not. Only God can do that.

LETTER FROM THE ARCHBISHOP

Dear Friends,
Our Holy Father Pope John Paul II consistently draws our attention to the Third Millennium of Christianity. He likewise reiterates the vital importance of our wholehearted commitment on this occasion to proclaiming the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
To this end it is imperative that we make effective use of every available means for deepening our own knowledge and love of Jesus Christ and His Church and for spreading the gospel message to those who have not yet heard it.
The Bishops of the United States gave great emphasis to this at this June meeting this year. On that occasion a "Pastoral Plan for Church Communications" was unanimously adopted. It establishes key goals and directions for church engagement with the media today.
The Catholic Communications Campaign enable us to reach millions of people throughout the United States each year by providing resources for religious programming on television and radio, and religious education and informational materials offered to the print media and in audio and video formats.
On the weekend of September 13 and 14 you will be invited to support the vital work of evangelization funded by the Catholic Communications Campaign each year.
One half of the amount collected is used for programs in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. The other half supports initiatives at the national level.
I wish to thank you in advance for your generosity. Your gift will assist the Church in proclaiming Jesus Christ through the power of His word.
Gratefully in Christ,
Most Rev. Justin Rigali
Archbishop of St. Louis
