Pastor's Thoughts
Here are some important facts about
evangelization:
1. Evangelization (EV- = Good news; -ANGELIZ- =
be a messenger of; -ATION = ongoing process or
state of being) is not just preaching doctrine or
teaching morals but making the presence of Jesus
Christ unmistakable and credible to others.
2. Every Christian is mandated to make
Christ known to others by virtue of baptism
through which we share in the life and mission of
Jesus Christ as a member of his Body.
3. We make Christ known to others in two primary
ways: witness and ministry or service.
"Witness" means to touch and turn the hearts of
others to God by our practice of faith, Christian
life-style, and moral convictions. "Ministry" is
a conscious and concerted effort to make Christ
better known and accepted to others, whether
within the Church or outside of it.
4. As a parish community we have two levels of
evangelization: the witness and service provided
by the individual parishioners and parish
families, and the attempt on the part of the
parish leadership to act in your name to discover
and uncover Christ's presence and the Spirit's
power in our neighborhood.
"Grace builds on nature," the old saying
goes. It's so true here! To prepare the way of
the Lord, there are many "non-churchy" things that
need to be done as part of evangelization, like
making the neighborhood safe and drug-free,
getting in touch with the needs of the people, and
providing for necessities around us through the
Food Pantry, St. Vincent dePaul Society, and our
new efforts at social-service advocacy and
counseling.
The biggest change in our efforts at
evangelization (over and above our involvement in
C-4 and community organization) is the presence of
the social worker and the psychologist who
will be available for anyone living within the
parish boundaries (call me for more
information).
Evangelization is such an important and
critical part of our parish life, and it is not
the work of just a few people; it is the
responsibility of everyone.
I look forward to your help, your comments,
and your endorsement of our community's work to
make Christ more present.

"Give thanks to God the Father always and
for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ" (Eph 15:20). Realizing that all we have
is gift from God and being grateful for these
gifts is an important part of our call to
stewardship. We express our gratitude to God
through the selfless sharing of our gifts.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Last week I answered a question about putting
certain articles on the parish bulletin boards,
like a novena to St. Jude, which I said was a
private devotion, not church business, and so it
was removed. I'd like to spend the next two weeks
writing about private devotions, and here's why:
An incident that happened several weeks ago
disturbed me, so I thought I would share some of
my thoughts with you. One evening, as I was
locking up the church, I came across several
stacks of "never-fail" St. Jude Novenas placed
around the church. What bothered me was the
instructions given for the proper performance of
this particular devotion. The pray-er is to "make
81 copies [of the novena] and leave 9 copies on
each of the 9 days [of the novena, in church]."
The instructions also stated that the novena
"prayer must be said 6 times each day for 9
consecutive days...and has never been known
to fail."
The first thing which came to my mind was how
much the directives resembled a chain letter:
...do exactly as it says, don't break the chain,
and all good things will come to you...but if you
break the chain--watch out!
I'm not against novenas and other
private devotions. They have helped and comforted
many people in times of need, brought many people
closer to God, that the Church recognizes the
worthiness of these devotions, and I have
personally experienced their value. My concern is
with the "rubrics," if you will, of the above
novena. More next week on devotions...

activities are beginning anew around the parish.
One of these activities is the Rite of Christian
Initiation of Adults (RCIA). With this in mind,
Brother Richard is asking for your help with this
wonderful journey of faith. Would you consider
service as a catechist, sharing your knowledge
of the faith with our inquirers? Perhaps you
would like to be a parish sponsor, guiding a
candidate through the process by offering your
support, guidance, and encouragement. Or would
you like to serve as a host or hostess for one
or more of the sessions, sharing your culinary
talents with candidates, sponsors, and catechists
alike? If so, please contact Brother Richard at
the Parish Office (353-7470), and you too will be
part of this faith-filled experience.

RETURNING GOD'S GIFTS
"What return shall I make to the Lord
for his goodness to me?" (Ps 116:12).
The Archdiocese of St. Louis is beginning the
new capital campaign entitled Returning God's
Gifts, Sharing our Hope, which is designed to
meet the future needs of Catholic families,
individuals, and parishes.
This is an endowment campaign. The money
raised will provide perpetual funding to address
defined areas of need in the archdiocese -- 27% to
fund Catholic education, 26% to ensure healthy
parishes, 18% to support retired priests, 8% to
maintain the seminary, 10% to benefit our own
parish, 7% to take care of administrative costs,
and 4% to strengthen the cathedral of the
archdiocese. In this campaign only earned
interest is spent; the principal is untouched.
Besides what will be returned to St.
Anthony's, we will especially benefit from the
education endowment which will provide tuition
supplement for parishioners and the parish
development endowment which will allow us to be a
strong cornerstone in South St. Louis.
Everyone in the parish will be contacted
soon. Listen with an open mind. Respond with a
generous and compassionate heart.
FUNERAL HOMES SPONSOR "ESCAPE SCHOOL"
Hoffmeister South County Chapel is bringing
the nationally recognized program called "Escape
School" to Bayless High School Auditorium on
Monday, August 18th, at 4:00pm to help empower
children, parents, and the community by teaching
critical abduction prevention and survival
tactics.
Krieghauser South Mortuary will sponsor the
very same program on Tuesday, August 19th, at
10:00am at the Avalon Cinema (4225 S.
Kingshighway).
Robert Stuber, a former police officer and
author, developed Escape School to address
practical prevention techniques in a manner that
is neither frightening nor threatening. A
national expert, Stuber has spoken with millions
of parents, teachers, law enforcement officials,
and children about child abduction across the
country. He has appeared on national and local
radio and TV programs, including "The Oprah
Winfrey Show" and "48 Hours."
The program is FREE OF CHARGE;
reservations are not necessary. For more
information call 544-7100 or 351-4320.
