St. Anthony of Padua Bulletin
May 3, 1998
HAPPY EASTER! This Fourth Sunday of
Easter is called "Good Shepherd Sunday" because we
come face to face with the Risen Savior who
reveals himself as the one who compassionately
shepherds us toward eternal life (Gospel).
This encounter with the Good Shepherd has a
profound effect on our personal journey toward
holiness. We realize that we've been purified,
satisfied, loved, and taken care of. Hence, we
are affirmed and supported in moving forward to
survive any attack on our faith, whether from the
inside through weakness or stubbornness or lack of
self-worth, or from the outside through
misunderstanding, criticism, or violence
(second reading).
If this is so in our personal lives, it is
all the more true in our experience as Church, as
the Body of Christ. As the people of God, we are
protected and saved by the Lamb of God who is our
Shepherd. This gives us courage and meaning.
Hence, we are willing to stand secure and sure in
our proclamation of the faith in the face of
spiritual, psychological, social, or physical
attack (first reading).
How does this apply to St. Anthony's? In the
first place, we declare as a faith community,
"We are alive!" After all these years, after
the changes in the neighborhood, after the fire,
still the Lord constantly shepherds us toward
eternal life. We willingly and eagerly follow his
voice through Sacred Scripture, through the
teaching and preaching of the Church, through the
cry of the poor, because this is how we stay
alive!
We stand together and we stand strong in our
higher standard of morals above the lowest common
denominator of our society, of our neighborhood.
In other words, a standard of welcoming, of
accepting, of opening ourselves to others, as well
as of human dignity and respect and virtue,
regardless of what we encounter around us.
As a result -- as a light in darkness or as a
cry in the wilderness -- we make our Easter faith
known to others not by judging them, not by being
the "religion police," but by witnessing with
authenticity and credibility the truth of Jesus'
message. We eagerly welcome others into this
reality we ourselves experience.
This is how we who are shepherded with
compassion shepherd others with loving truth.
This is how we live Easter.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY...
About Unity:
"What the church brings to any society or
neighborhood is the experience of making
differences public so that they can be shared to
create a richer unity. In the church every racial
and cultural difference must be made public so
that everyone can come to know how Christ can be
black or white or brown or yellow or red. If I do
not know any Mexicans or Russians or Africans or
Chicagoans, I cannot experience how Christ can be
Mexican or Russian or African or Chicagoan. The
differences must be made public, but always in a
way that they can be shared, so that they can
enrich everyone." Francis Cardinal George,
Archbishop of Chicago
